My personal pick for Sports Minister is...
Given a choice, I would love to have a former athlete like Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan appointed as the Sports Minister. But for him to assume the post, Dr Jega has to play politics.
So reality dictates it has to be a politician and they usually come from UMNO. In the event Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob is "moved upstairs" in the impending Cabinet re-shuffle, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah is a suitable candidate to helm the Youth and Sports Ministry.
With his vast knowledge and experience in dealing with youth, Saifuddin, the Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister, may inject much-needed vigour and real leadership into the Ministry.
The media savvy former president of Malaysian Youth Council would then be able to leave sports to the real experts, meaning those from the National Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Malaysia and maybe the Sports Commissioner's office (if they appoint someone new and allow Datuk Nik Mahmud Nik Yusof to retire into oblivion).
My former colleague S.S. Dhaliwal wrote in his blog Datuk Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad is being considered for the the post.
But if Ismail is retained at the Ministry, Dafi may get to perform at the Anugerah Sukan Negara every year. Whatever happens, nobody can do no worse than Datuk Seri Hajjah Azalina Othman Said who was parachuted into the seat in 2004!
