Merdeka, merdeka, merdeka

The former chief editor of Utusan Melayu autographs loose cannon's book

with renowned social activist

Loose cannon remembers the day when this actor had the courage to pose questions from the floor to the management while the rest of us kept quiet

The 1982 and 1986 World Cups would have been different without his usual and casual style...

I would like to think that I've contributed a little to the Merdeka spirit and its celebrations this year. My gratitude to renowned film director Anwardi Jamil and sportscaster Zainal Abidin Rawop for giving me the opportunity to broaden my horizons.

Merdeka: Kata-kata Mereka is a four-episode documentary that runs until Sept 13 over Astro Awani and produced by Anwardi's Manjafilms Sdn Bhd. Malaysian Sporting Heroes - the Story So Far kicked off on Aug 5 and runs until Sept 16.

Boy, you still remember the incident in 2000 when Kee Thuan Chye was the only person who had the guts to fire a few pertinent questions at the great Kadir Jasin at a crisis meeting to address NST's plummeting circulation. Kadir was then head honcho of the NST. Kadir was the untouchable, and his word was law. He ruled with an iron fist, which Rizal should be aware of. Recalcitrants and perceived traitors were despatched with alacrity. As a reward for exposing the way the NST was being run, Kee was marked as NST 's biggest enemy. Kee had the guts to stand up to a dictator, but none of us, including you Rizal, had the balls to confront him. I was particularly disappointed with Rizal for keeping quiet, which flew in the face of his reputation for speaking the truth. For all his efforts, I voted Kee as the Best Actor of 2000. The worst actors were of course the gutless NST staff who left their balls at the comfort of their homes.

James Ang, one of the best sports journalists of his generation, and I are great admirers of Rizal. Rizal is a man of integrity, but Rizal proabably forgot where he placed his balls when his turn to step up to the plate came. Probably the sight of Kadir Jasin made him think twice about confronting him. Be that as it may, we forgive him for his rare transgression.
