RM1 million for Olympic gold

A gold medal at the Beijing Olympics is worth RM1 million!

Our athletes never had it so good. Not only they get monthly allowances and other perks, but the National Sports Council has also reviewed its incentive scheme called Shakam, or Skim Hadiah Kemenangan.

If Josiah Ng wins the keirin or sprint event in Beijing, he will become a millionaire!

A silver medal is worth RM300,000 while a bronze RM100,000. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak after chairing the Cabinet Committee on Sports Development a short while ago.

The previous amount under the scheme was RM160,000 for gold, RM80,000 for silver and RM40,000 for bronze.

There are only five Malaysian medal winners at the biggest stage of all, and that too came after badminton was introduced in Barcelona'92.

They are Razif-Jalani Sidek (bronze medal in 1992), Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock (silver in 1996) and Rashid Sidek (bronze in 1996). They are beneficiaries of a pension scheme introduced during Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said's time.

what else do i have to say if that is the amount of money thrown to our athletes to be world champion? i tried to be positive in this issue but i just simply can't. some might agree and some might not. jangan jelmakan budaya sogokon untuk mencapai kejayaan kerana kita perlukan juara sejati. get them to win the medal first and they reward them accordingly. history showed us that we are only a one time champion....

Insentive? Graft? Bribery?
Same thing but different. Funny how things work.
I always believe in pride above all else when it comes to sports.
Apparently it's all about the Tuanku Abdul Rahman's (may he rest in peace).....
Not that I don't want to see one of our athletes win a gold, but it shouldn't be about the money, or a Datukship even...

we should encourage our young to be serius in sports. The mentality of our young generation are different from us. With the RM 1 mill they will be more passionate with the sports. the ultimate aim is to win gold medal in olympic not just become world no 1 for the sports that nobody care

Why do we dangle the carrot in front of the horse? So that (hopefully) the horse will run, cycle, sail or play badminton well enough that it would have the carrot in the end.

But can we force the horse to drink, even if we brought it to water? Depends if the horse is thirsty enough.

Each to their own carrot. For some horse, RM1mil could buy lotsa carrot :)

Cheers

Nobody can please anybody.

Bukan senang nak jadi juara dunia. Hmmmm.....jika skuasy menjadi salah satu disiplin dalam Olimpik, mungkin impian kita mengejar Emas Olimpik lebih mudah dicapai.
