Sultan Ahmad Shah to quit

In a recent tete-a-tete with loose cannon, Sultan Ahmad Shah hinted that he would be relinquishing the presidency of the FA of Malaysia (FAM), a position His Highness has held since 1984. His Highness' term ends next year.

This would probably allow FAM to make a clean break and empower the next president and his men with the executive powers to impose changes or revamp the whole system without interference from State FAs or politicians.

My personal pick is for Sultan Ahmad Shah's eldest son, Tengku Abdullah, to take over the mantle. Why him, one might ask. For one Tengku Abdullah, a vice-president in 1984 and later deputy president until he quit in 2007 following the Asian Cup debacle, remains a strong advocate of club football and the idea of the MSL Sdn Bhd, the marketing arm of FAM, running the M-League.

There's also another candidate trying to win over the hearts and minds of those who matter - the State FAs who vote the office-bearers in - Kelantan FA president and former Sports Minister, Tan Sri Annuar Musa. Read between the lines here.

Loose cannon has nothing against politicians but let's support individuals who do not use the association's money to further their interests. Sultan Ahmad Shah and Tengku Abdullah are known to spend their own money.

Ideally, Tengku Abdullah should be assisted by someone in the mould of Windsor John, a FIFA expert in football development. Read Ahmad Khawari Isa's take here and jaihomalaysia's inside knowledge here.

1.With Tengku Abdullah providing direction and Windsor to implement things, there will be no more building the house from the roof! FAM will then subscribe to the maxim management is doing the things right, leadership is doing the right things.

More on the micro level later. Read also Joe Marcose's take here and his tribute here.

There are pro and con about this matter ...

In my short thinking I would agree if the Sultan to loose his position to somebody else ...

After so long, our football future seems to dark and darker day by day ... and for sometimes fluctuated just like the stock ...

I hope there is somebody that really experienced and brave to conduct the position ...

Regarding the money . . . I think this is not the big issue. FAM has the allocation . . . Why there is the reason to find the person who can use their own money?

Is there still not sufficient?? So there have to be many wasted $$$$ in their program and works .. I believed ...

When we talk about money ... there is no ending ... Why nation like Myanmar and Vietnam can pursue their football ambition within thin allocation ...

In my opinion, now is the time for us to 'let go' the politicians, VIP, stupid ppl from the chairs ...

Why not give a damn oppurtunity to the new face that really accountable ...

Datuk Anuar Musa ..???Ohhhhhh ... Is there other ppls plssss???

Rizal, you are right. Tengku Abdullah is the right person for the time being and Winsor to see the vision comes true. People who just want to hold post whether as administrator or executives should share the President's vision to bring the dignity of Malaysia Football to greater height. In administration at least to the era of Dato' Paul, where the whole world looks upon for guidance and examples should be reached. Privatisation of the league is a god idea. The policy makers - the reps from the State FAs should be sincere in bringing about change to the system, the development at grassroots and also the top. SAS had his time but the people under him do not work to see his vision being achieved. Good luck to Malaysia Football

Lu fikirlah sendiri Windsor!

Windsor (if he becomes the General Secretary) should be given a free hand to hire and fire. These way he can get the best people (irrespective of race, class or creed)to work with him for the betterment of Malaysian football.

Maybe we can also witness the return of Saudara Rizal and Brother Jaiho to FAM.

Cheers

Windsor perlu perbetulkan keadaan walaupun agak terlambat. Sekurang-kurangnya, masih ada sisa-sisa yang boleh dibaikpulih.
laman sensawang perlulah diupdatekan.

dear rizal,

firstly i must say that sultan ahmad shah should be given its credit due - for all his efforts to keep fam as strong as ever in many ways although the setback was the national team performance. but other factors were related to downfall of the national team, and its not the president to take the blame, as some critics had stated.
But one cant deny that its timely that tengku abdullah to take over the show and lead a new road to the 'recovery' of fam - especially the performance of the national team. and it must be a total change in the set-up of the fam office.
im certain tengku abdullah has what it takes to run the organisation wihth his vast experience and knowledge.
Daulat tuanku...

Bro are you grass, these are the guys who got rid of Tan sri Hamzah which ultimately started the rot in soccer in Malaysia. We are in the shit house in most sports because we allowed these guys to dictate our lives.Or by n by do you know why they want be invovled as without the sport who would ever know them.( rubbing shoulders with the world elite n box seats in world cups)

Dear Rizal,

I am of the view that the President and Vice President post be seen as more of a corporate post.

We can learn a thing or two from the MLS (and its marketing arm Soccer United Marketing), where they have a Commissioner (currently Ron Garber) who oversees the running and expansion of the MLS. In the past 10 years, the MLS has made great strides in a sporting and economic sense (see how they have a salary cap, transfers are centralised and . When asked about plans for future expansion of the MLS Garber had this to say :"We’ll assess the impact on our player pool, on the growth of our fan base, on television ratings and commercial sponsorships. We’ll evaluate future expansion after that. While I’m convinced that this will be a larger league in the future, we have made no decisions when that point will be."

(Courtesy of The New York Times, Friday September 25, 2009)

Further, for a strong national team we need a strong league... Learn from the up and coming leagues with great player development... Again look at the US and Japan... (you can go to http://www.ussoccer.com/ or http://www.jfa.or.jp/eng/ or http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/WhatWeDo/NationalFootballCentre.aspx)

Economic considerations are painstakingly measured in relation to the league. Our MLS has teams pulling out every year...

Another country we should emulate is England. I'm talking about the FA and not the Premier League here. They have an indepentent chairman in Lord Triesman who oversees the growth and development of football in general. I'm sure the big-wigs in FAM can afford to go to England and "study" how their FA work.(kalau susah-susah pun, or takut buang duit... pergi je http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/WhoWeAre/TheOrganisation/Player/TheDecisionMakers.aspx)

However, I think we should still have a look at how they run the MLS or the USSF. Closer to home, Japan would be a good model.

It's not a matter of whether politicians or corporate figures or even figureheads... Its the good of the game which should come first (Itulah aku mintak kerja kat FAM korang reject application aku... I'm serious here... they didn't even have the courtesy to write a rejection e-mail/letter.

I can write endlessly on this issue (intelligently, i might add... no disrespect to the FAM and their incredibly bright ideas) without going to the US or Japan for a lawatan sambil belajar. Dudes, pick up the phone... korang dari FAM, USSF layan... Japan FA akan layan... FA England pun akan layan korang...

In any case, whoever becomes the next President better get it right...

Here we go again! Some of us still think that SAS qutting FAM is a big deal, big NEWS. It might be if the FAM equals the FA of England.Unfortunately, this is an organisation that is long past its heyday, just like the sport. The "curse" of Tan Sri Hamzah stills stalks the corridors of Wisma FAM,dooming all who seek an office there to eternal depression. It makes no difference bro' as to who takes over from SAS. The stark reality is that, there is nothing much to build on.For that matter, even the money's gone!Let's put our ringgit in some other sport which still has a future.

Anak Sukan
p.s. Bila dapat Datukship Rizal? Hari Jadi Tuanku, this month kan?

KakiBola said...

Just straight to the topic..its timely for SAS to step down before things get worse. No matter what others might say about his role of late, SAS had failed to ensure that the organisation runs smoothly. As for the successor, its time that a corporate figure leads FAM. TM had failed during his tenure and there's no reason for him to return when he is now on "trial" for his new role at MHF. I would throw few names - Datuk Nazir Razak (CIMB GCE), Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal Hj Abu Bakar (Chairman of MK Land), Datuk Seri Tony Fernandez (GCEO of Air Asia).

PENGESAHAN

kertas kosongpun Azzuddin pakai sign..

Bro Rizal, cuba check statutes...
sahkah pelantikan baru tu..

Bro Rizal,
I think to change FAM management is not a good idea. The best thing is to have the trio Tengku Abdullah, Windsor and Saifuddin ( these are professionals in our country) to run MSL independently as professional. Let FAM with thier ways of doing thing.

We await the next FAM council/exco meeting...and we also await the new/real/actual media officer of FAM.

I dont understand how would Rizal Hashim label a guy like Windsor John as an expert all so easily!

Getting a post with either FIFA or AFC dont necessarily make Windsor an expert in football development.
Yes, Windsor was smart to find his way into AFF, then FIFA and whatever after this..
Coordinating tournaments, internal AFF/FIFA meetings is one thing..real talent problems of Malaysian football is another..
