Jagoan 1992

Gambar 1992.

Rahime Yusoff - mengajar aku menulis dengan berbunga. Menggunakan beberapa perkataan unik. Susunan ayat yang memukau. Kemudian menjadi setiausaha akhbar Annuar Musa.

Saodi Mat Atar - "kau tulis kena main sentimen, Zian suka," kata Saodi ketika aku mendapat story Persatuan Sepak Takraw Malaysia (PSM) mahu memanggil semula Rehan Mohd Din dan Malek Shamsuddin untuk berganding dengan Nordin Sabaruddin selaku trio emas. Masih setiausaha akhbar Menteri Besar Johor.

Hj Ali Mansor Aman - boss yang cool, bercakap bila perlu. Kalau Hj Ali jaga desk, satu story kecik pun cukuplah.

Pengadil peringkat kebangsaan. Apabila aku dipilih menjadi Setiausaha Persatuan Penulis-penulis Sukan Malaysia (SAM), Hj "Skuad" Mali menghadiahkan aku buku Bagaimana Mengendalikan Persatuan. Kini bendahari SAM.

Ishak Dalib - kerja aku, kalau tidak menyambut telefon Kak Pah di 363, membawa Ishak berdating...Bos Jaguh yang suruh aku buat macam-macam. Macam-macam tu buat aku belajar.

Rodly Nayan - bekas pengarang Majalah Bolasepak dan penyunting Berita Harian. Aku jadi saksi nikahnya.

Tension aku. Batch aku. Kini Pengarang Berita Harian Metro.

Badrulhisham Othman - Satu pagi di Alor Star, aku naik teksi. Drebar tu tanya dari mana, cakaplah KL, nak tengok bola. Wartawan ke? aha, Berita Harian, jawab aku. Oh, saya minat tulisan Badrulhisham Othman...tulisan dia hebat. Bad banyak mengajar aku bukan saja dari segi analisis bola sepak bahkan pasal kehidupan juga. Tanpa sepatah bicara pun cukup kerana caranya yang diplomatik, non-confrontational serta soft-spoken mengajar seorang junior pentingnya bersabar. Ketika kami berkampung di Athens, Greece hampir sebulan meliput Sukan Olimpik 2004, Bad sedikitpun tak tunjuk dia bos, bahkan sanggup tidur di luar bilik kami yang berdepan dengan bilik mandi. Ketika Lazarus Rokk, Tham Foo Kan dan Azahar Taib sedap berdengkur, Bad sudah keluar cari story. Seawal 7.0pagi. Aduh...Kini Ketua Penyunting Berita Harian.

FAM sued?

Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) president Ahmad Khawari Isa says FAM is involved in a legal wrangle. He stopped short of saying the national body, who will elect a new set of office-bearers on Saturday, had been slapped with a civil suit. Read FAM in legal trouble?

A world class sports town in Labu?

Ted Meekma Consult says:
"In mid 2009, we signed a long term contract with Sime Darby Property, a subsidiary of Sime Darby Berhad, the largest multi-national company in Malaysia. Our role is to help concept and develop a 446 acre multi-sport training academy within the sports, health and education-themed township Sime Darby is building in Labu (20 minutes east of Kuala Lumpur International Airport).

SDSA will be unlike anything seen before in Asia. It will combine an international school private academic education with world class athletic training in a variety of sports, and it will deliver these two programs on an almost equal basis. In addition, the National Sports Institute of Malaysia will re-locate its headquarters to 100 acres of Sime Darby land adjacent to our academy. This highly respected sports science research and development organization will be instrumental in helping us attract Malaysian national teams and players to come train at SDSA on both a short term (weekly) and long term (semester) basis. We are certain that an environment as unique as this one will attract athletes and student/athletes not only from Malaysia and ASEAN, but from China, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, the Middle East and beyond.

This exciting sports and education complex will be built in the middle of a world class residential development alongside three great golf courses, clubs, destination resort hotels, entertainment venues and health care features."

In an interview with pargolfmagazine.com.my, Sime Darby Property MD, Datuk Tunku Badlishah Tunku Annuar, says:

We’re building a Sime Darby Sports Academy near KLIA in our Labu Estate,” revealed Tunku Badlishah. “This is a vision of our chairman (Tun Musa Hitam), who visited the IMG Academies in Florida about two years ago and thought that there was potential for something like that for this region, based in Malaysia.”

The first phase of the mammoth project will include a golf academy, golf course, tennis academy, soccer academy, Olympic-size swimming pool, running tracks and a 30,000-seater stadium. Tunku Badlishah noted that work is expected to commence this year.

“The layout plan has been submitted to the authorities, so we hope to get approval within the next month or so and to break ground this year. The construction period for the first phase is probably around two years, so we hope to start operations some time in 2012,” he said. “There will be an academy course and we’re talking to IMG about two other designer courses adjacent to that course, so we’re looking at a 54-hole facility. As the need arises, we have a lot of land in that area so we can grow.

“The idea is to start young, to start with the kids. At the IMG Academies, they focus on the age group of 10 to 18 and I think that’s where we are very weak in Malaysia. The other problem in Malaysia is always the academic side; you either choose to excel in sports or you study. With this academy, we will combine the best in sports with the best in education.”

Sime Darby has engaged Ted Meekma, former director of the IMG Academies in Florida, to spearhead the project.

“Ted has been helping us design the facility and he came up with the specs based on his vast experience,” noted Tunku Badlishah. “He will also help us to set up the programmes. I think that’s the most important thing; building structures is easy but the programmes are the key because we won't only be focusing on the sports. Obviously the physio side is important, as is the mental side and nutrition.

Wow, I'm impressed!

But wait...

K. Rajagobal wants competitive matches on a regular basis...though we have an 80,000-seater stadium at Shah Alam and a 100,000-capacity National Stadium

Our tennis youngsters venture beyond NTC to develop their game...though we have a fully equipped tennis centre at Jalan Duta

The nation's top cyclists are based in Australia...though we have two velodromes

Infrastructure or hardware - first class...

Software development? ...

I hope the world-class sports academy in Labu would appeal to world class athletes as well.

What our athletes need is top-class sparring. If we had this all along, Lee Chong Wei, Nicol David and Azizulhasni Awang would not see the need to live elsewhere and Rajagobal would not be lamenting the lack of exposure!

But I would not mind driving to Labu, as it will be a trip down memory lane, revisiting the days when our late parents took us to see Man who studied at one of the nation's leading boarding schools in the 80s.

Thinking outside the box Part 1

It's cliche lah but going against convention takes guts and willpower. I wanted to give this posting a heading like this: "Thomas Cup victory 1992 - revealed", or the story behind the scenes. But not now. Later perhaps...

I had the privilege of meeting four individuals who formed the core of the 1992 team - two who were the brains outside the court, and the other two who sweated it out on it!

Tan Sri Elyas Omar provided leadership and direction. Chief coach Datuk Punch Gunalan did not leave any stone unturned and as a champion in his own right, he knew what to do to create an environment conducive to success. As captain, Razif Sidek kept the team spirit intact. Cheah Soon Kit was one half of the pair that clinched the winning point.

"It took us half a decade to prepare a team that were able to win the Cup. The seeds were sown when we launched project Thomas Cup/Uber Cup/Olympic Games (TUO), modified from a similar project by KLBA of which I was president.

"Appointing coaches from China, beginning with Fang Kaixiang, was a masterstroke. He was a real master but I must reveal the final say even on team selection rested on my shoulders.

"It was a collective effort and decision. I remember vividly having to convince Fang that we must play Misbun Sidek as first singles, followed by Foo Kok Keong and Rashid Sidek in the 1988 semi-finals. Fang wanted to push Kok Keong as first singles, with Rashid second. I argued if Rashid, a greenhorn, was to play Eddy Kurniawan, he would have been outplayed."

So the memorable 1988 semi-final line-up read: Misbun v Icuk Sugiarto, Kok Keong v Eddy Kurniawan, Rashid v Ardy Wiranata, Razif-Jalani Sidek v Eddy Hartono-Rudy Gunawan and Cheah Soon Kit-Ong Beng Teong v Bobby Ertanto-Liem Swie King.

As it turned out, Misbun played like a man possessed. He lost but Icuk was made to sweat by Misbun's baseline lobs.

"Our message to Misbun then - play all out because your brothers are watching. Give them the right signal. Fight," said Elyas.

Kok Keong however went down tamely to Kurniawan. The score stood at 2-0.

Rashid in contrast was fired up by Misbun's gallant display. Asian junior champ in 1986, having beaten Allan Budi Kusuma, Rashid adopted an attacking strategy against Ardy, two years his junior. Ardy was outplayed. Rashid bagged the all-important point.

Enter Razif-Jalani, the 1982 All-England champions renowned for their impregnable defence.

"It was a result of training over the years. From young we were exposed to flicking the shuttle against the wall. And the normal practice was to have our sparring partners delivering dropshots and smashes standing on a table," Razif recalled.

Hartono-Gunawan were attacking-minded. A game of contrasts but a spectacle for the crowd. By the third set, Hartono was overcome by fatigue, having failed to penetrate Razif-Jalani's defensive strategy. At one point the Indonesians executed 17 smashes in succession without making the kill. The tables turned, Razif-Jalani attacked Hartono relentlessly.

2-2. Beng Teong, known more as a singles player, partnering a rookie in the doubles, Soon Kit, who was a non-playing reserve in the 1986 edition. For Soon Kit, it must have been a dream coming up against Swie King, one of his idols who made jumping smash a fashion.

"The Indonesian pair were World Cup winners a year earlier, so they were the favourites," said Soon Kit. "But we knew Swie King was no longer the Swie King of old. Beng Teong guided me, acted as my mentor while I concentrated on playing to my strength, delivering smashes from the baseline.

Malaysia lost to China in the 1988 final. But Malaysia had overcome a mental barrier by beating the Indonesians and entering the final for the first time since 1967. A giant step had been taken.

ATP World Tour Tennis Stars Salute Return of

Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2010

Three Top-Ten and Six Top-Twenty Confirmed

26 July 2010, Kuala Lumpur : Kuala Lumpur will once again showcase a star studded line-up of ATP World Tour stars in 2010 with three top-ten, six top-twenty, plus three crowd favorites confirmed to headline the second edition of the ATP 250 tournament, which takes from September 25 to October 3, at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, in the company of the Event Patron, Yang Amat Berbahagia Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is the wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, announced today that Robin Soderling (No.5), Nikolay Davydenko (No.6), Tomas Berdych (No.8), David Ferrer (No.12), Mikhail Youzhny (No.14), Nicolas Almagro (No.18), the charismatic Marcos Baghdatis (No.25), former Wimbledon Champion Lleyton Hewitt (No.30) and Asia’s top ranked player, Lu Yen-Hsun (No.41) of Taiwan, will headline the USD 947,750 prize money tournament.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia was joined at today’s launch by Y.B. Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen, the Minister of Tourism, Malaysia, who underlined her Ministries support for what is Malaysia’s largest and fastest growing annual indoor international sporting event, and a representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia, Tournament Director Nick Freyer of IMG and the President of the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia, Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff.

Leading the star line-up is Soderling, who ended Rafael Nadal’s Paris campaign last year and Roger Federer’s this year. He has been the French Open runner-up for the last two years and in addition this year, has won the title at Rotterdam, was runner-up at Barcelona and Bastad, was a semi-finalist in Miami and a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon. His amazing run in the past twelve months has seen the Swede’s ranking rise to a career high of No.5. Joining Soderling is defending Champion Davydenko.

The Russian captured five ATP World Tour titles in 2009 and capped off the year by taking the inaugural KL title, the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai and his biggest career title so far, the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He finished 2009 in the top-six of the ATP rankings for the fifth consecutive year.

Also returning to Kuala Lumpur is Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, ranked No.8, who is having his break out season this year, being runner-up at the ATP 1000 tournament in Miami, a semi-finalist at the French Open as well as being the Wimbledon runner-up. A player with immense talent and a big game that is now charged with confidence, Tomas will be looking to add the KL title to his growing collection.

David Ferrer, ranked No. 12, is fast closing in on a return to the top ten, making him a potential fourth top-ten player in the Kuala Lumpur field. A former Tennis Masters Cup runner-up at Shanghai, he has had an outstanding season in 2010, reaching three finals and three semi-finals in the lead up to the French Open. He narrowly missed out on a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon, losing to Soderling in a five set thriller. Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny has also surged in the rankings this year, winning his sixth ATP World Tour title in Munich and reaching the finals at Rotterdam and Dubai, with quarter-final appearances at the ATP World Tour 1000 tournament at Miami and the French Open.

World No.18, Nicolas Almagro, will be making his first visit to Malaysia in 2010. So far this year, he has captured his sixth ATP World Tour title at the SkiStar Swedish Open, defeating defending Champion Soderling in the Final just a week ago. He has reached the semi-finals of the ATP World 1000 tournament in Madrid as well as had quarter-final appearances at Acapulco, Miami, Munich and the French Open. The Spaniard will be joined by Asia’s No.1 player, “Rendy” Lu, who has jumped 41 places to No.41 in the ATP World Tour rankings, after becoming the first Asian male since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995, to make it into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, with his historic win over 2009 runner-up Andy Roddick at Wimbledon this year.

Completing today’s player confirmations are Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis. Baghdatis has returned to the top-thirty after requiring a wild card from the tournament last year, and claimed his fourth ATP title at Sydney at the start of the 2010 season. He followed this up with one of his most memorable career wins, when he finally defeated top seed Roger Federer, 57 75 76(4) at Indian Wells this year. Hewitt, a former World No.1 and Wimbledon Champion, has returned to form after two hip surgeries, claiming another grass court title which also snapped his 15-match losing streak against Federer, defeating him 36 76(4) 6-4 to win the 2010 Wimbledon warm up tournament at Halle. It was his 28th ATP title.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak said, “It seems that after only one edition, we have made quite a name for ourselves in tennis circles around the world and the welcome return of so many of the star players from last year, all of whom have seen strong rises in the rankings since they visited our shores, is testament to what has been done so far, as we work to build this tournament into one of the finest 250 events on the ATP World Tour.”

Tournament Director Nick Freyer, Senior Vice President IMG and Head of Tennis, Asia, said “it is a tremendous honor for everyone here, that we be rewarded with such a strong field. To have so many stars wanting to return to Kuala Lumpur, makes the tournament team ever determined to set high standards and to think of new and interesting enhancements which will continue to make KL a favored stop with the players. Our aim is to make this tournament the best it can be and I salute and thank deeply, the Prime Minister, the Event Patron, the Tourism and Sports Ministries, our Host Broadcaster Astro and LTAM, and the many other organizations and individuals for their support in this journey.”

“Malaysia Truly Asia Review” Hawkeye electronic line calling technology will once again be a feature of the tournament, with the “Malaysia Truly Asia” logo seen in all local and international television broadcasts. The tournament will be one of the most heavily marketed, and televised, ATP 250 tournaments on the calendar.

In videos prepared for today’s launch, defending champion Davydenko said, “I really enjoyed the tournament in Kuala Lumpur last year and it was the stepping stone for some of my very best tennis that I played over the next months. The organisation and atmosphere were wonderful and it was an easy decision for me to return this year, to defend my title in KL.” Robin Soderling said, “I am happy to be coming back to Malaysia this year. Me and my team really enjoyed the class there, everything was so good. It was a great city, the hotel and everything was really nice. I am really hoping to improve on my semi-final showing last year and hopefully winning the title this year.”

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2010 is one of only five ATP World Tour events to be staged in continental Asia and features a 28 player singles main draw and 16 teams in doubles. The singles qualifying draw will be open to 32 players. Two qualifying singles wild-card slots will be allocated to local players and there will once again be an opportunity for a local player to join forces with one of the top seeded singles stars, to play in the doubles main-draw, courtesy of a main draw doubles wild-card. The tournament is sanctioned by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia.

Tennis fans will get the opportunity to meet many of the players and chase down autographs at the twice daily “Player Autograph Sessions”. Also continuing, is the highly popular "Catch the Signed Ball" promotion which offers hundreds of high value prizes to catchers of autographed balls, hit into the crowd by the winning players after every Centre Court match. The Grand Prize on one evening will once again be a new car. There will be on-site entertainment, food and music on a daily basis, a star player clinic for Malaysia’s promising juniors and promotional opportunities for fans to win participation in the on-court coin toss and dinner in the player’s lounge. “Signature Photo Shoots” featuring the star players against iconic KL backgrounds for tourism promotion, will again be an important tournament feature.

Applications have opened for the "Malaysia's Best Job" program, a continuation of the successful tournament initiative founded last year. The program allows one lucky Malaysian to work for the tournament across all departments, gaining valuable industry related experience for a six-week period leading up to and including the event. The winner receives a USD 2,500 personal development grant. Further details are available at www.MalaysianOpenTennis.com/2010/best_job.php

The singles player entry deadline for the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2010 is on August 16, after which the full singles entry field will be announced. Three main draw singles wildcards are held by the tournament to be allocated at the discretion of the Tournament Director in the run up to the tournament.

Generasi skuad Harris bukan calang-calang. Penjaga gol Syamsuri Mustafa, benteng pertahanan dianggotai Norhafiz Zamani Misbah, Mazuki Yusof dan Irwan Fadzli Idrus, manakala Indra Putra Mahayuddin permata digilap, menembusi penjuru kanan Korea Selatan menerusi larian mengelirukan.

Ruangan Garis Tepi nukilan aku

Setiausaha Agung – bekas guru Datuk Paul Mony Samuel.

Going out on a blaze of glory, Tuanku will be remembered for the right reasons. Tiba masa mencari pengganti Tuanku."

Tapi ramai yang berpendapat sebaliknya. Kata seorang rakan, Tuanku mahu mempertahankan jawatan presiden Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM) sebelum memberi laluan kepada penggantinya separuh jalan penggal 2010-2013.

Siapa pula pengganti Tuanku?

Tun Daim Zainuddin, peguam merangkap tokoh perniagaan merangkap politikus merangkap pengerusi jawatankuasa kewangan Gabungan Bola Sepak Asia (AFC) tentunya layak.

Ampun Tuanku...
Mari kita kaji senarai pencalonan:

Timbalan Presiden (dua jawatan):

1.Tengku Mahkota Tengku Abdullah Ahmad Shah

2.Datuk Seri Redzuan Tan Sri Sheikh Ahmad

3.Datuk Hj Che Mat Jusoh

4.Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Annuar Musa

5.Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim
Datuk Seri elok saja jaga Kesatuan Orang Amat Malang (KOAM) atau Karim OK Atlet Merana (KOAM).

6.Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad
Cukuplah Datuk Mokhtar sumbangan Datuk di Selangor dolu-dolu.

Naib presiden (empat jawatan):

1.Datuk Afandi Hamzah
OK lah...peguam dari Kelantan...

2.Datuk Seri Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar
Orang kuat Sultan Ahmad Shah.

3.Datuk S.Subramaniam
Kuota MIC la kot

4.Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin
Playmaker dalam pasukan. Dikatakan mencatur senarai anggota pemilihan. Ada sokongan akar umbi berasaskan pengaruhnya selaku setiausaha Persatuan Bola Sepak Selangor (FAS), pengerusi jawatankuasa futsal dan bola sepak pantai FAM dan pengurus pasukan futsal.

5.Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim
Eh bukan Pulau Pinang corot ke? YB fokus la tugas di Parlimen...

6.Datuk Seri Abdullah Hishan Mohd Hashim
Bekas ahli majlis FAM dan lembaga pengurus Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) zaman Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Hishan banyak menyumbang pada awal 90-an selaku pemilik Glamoir World of Sports, khususnya dalam menjulang imej bola sepak amnya menerusi pembabitan dalam anugerah SAM-Glamoir.
Orang kuat Perak FA la nie...

7.Datuk Subahan Kamal

Jawatankuasa Eksekutif (lapan kerusi):

1.Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim
Dikatakan calon Pengerusi Panel Penasihat Sukan (SAP).

2.Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman
Bekas Timbalan Menteri Besar Pahang dan pakar kewangan serta orang kepercayaan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

3.Datuk Hamdan Mohamed Khalib
Exco Negeri Kedah, setiausaha Persatuan Bola Sepak Kedah..nampak macam orang baik-baik.

4.Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan
Presiden Persatuan Bola Sepak Melayu Malaysia (PBMM). Ada tokoh...

5.Datuk Jefery Low Han Chau
Alamak, bukan lu kah yang sokong Kedah supaya haramkan pemain import? Amacam penyokong Kedah? Ada berani sokong dia? Naib Presiden KFA...

6.Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz
Bekas Ahli Parlimen Titiwangsa, aktif dalam basikal, Presiden Persatuan Bola Sepak Kuala Lumpur...

7.Datuk Ibrahim Shamsuddin
Orang kuat Negeri Sembilan...exco FAM dulu...dapat Datukship Pahang...

8.Datuk Osman Salleh
Ketua Polis Negeri Sembilan?

9.Datuk Soh Chin Ann
Bekas kapten pasukan kebangsaan, bekas pengurus pasukan, bekas pengerusi jawatankuasa pengadil, ahli jawatankuasa teknikal...

10.Rosmadi Ismail
Naib Presiden Kelantan FA (Kafa)...perlu ke?

11.Mej Rani Abdul Rahim
Setiausaha Persatuan Bola Sepak Angkatan Tentera...

12.Wan Mohd Nizam Wan Omar

13.S.Sivasundram
Orang kuat Kastam, bendahari FAS, orang kanan Hamidin...

Five years for Ambrose

Five years, just five years...that's the period I wish to give to 17-year old Ambrose Jilom before we judge whether or not he's the one to occupy the vacant seat of sprint king of Malaysia! His coach Watson Nyambek clocked 10.30sec at the age of 22, Sukma champ at age 18, Asian Track and Field Meet silver medallist at age 22. Read here and here

A journey to an end

Kebanyakan pemain Harimau Muda A anak buahnya juga. Kisah ini tentunya belum bernoktah.

Harapnya Harimau Muda A mengaum semula.

Betul ke SAM cap ayam?

Wah, Abdul Rahim Lajis (gambar), bekas penjaga gol bola sepak remaja Melaka, wartawan Berita Harian dan Utusan Malaysia, marah betul dengan Persatuan Penulis-penulis Sukan Malaysia (SAM), melabel SAM sebagai persatuan cap ayam,‘Persatuan Penulis Double Standard’, ‘Persatuan Ketam Ajar Anak Berjalan Lurus’, ‘Persatuan Penulis Lidah Bercabang’, ‘Persatuan Kuali Mengata Belanga Hitam’, ‘Persatuan Pemimpin Kencing Berdiri Ahli Kencing Berlari’, ‘Persatuan Kuman Di Seberang Nampak, Gajah Depan Mata Tidak Nampak’, ‘Persatuan Penulis Sukan Hipokrit’ dan banyak lagi.

Sedih aku.

Told you so

http://www.bt.com.bn/sports-world/2010/07/10/its-all-about-making-choices

FOOTBALL is all about space making space, coming into space and making sure the space is fully utilised. That was how former Cameroon and Ghana coach Claude Le Roy explained his philosophy to this writer when the Frenchman was pitching his tent in Kuala Lumpur in 1994-95.

Football too is about making choices. For Spanish attacker Pedro, he made the wrong choice by going solo instead of passing to Fernando Torres during their 1-0 semi-final win over Germany. It would not be wrong to assume that Torres would have added a second and kill the game.

The most difficult thing in life, is choices. Every player usually has three options on the field. So one has to choose and make decisions in a split second. It is burnt in the Dutch psyche that creating fast, compact-passing triangles is the way to play. It is embedded in their culture that every player has to understand the whole geometry of the pitch.

In David Winner's highly acclaimed book Brilliant Orange, former Ajax Amsterdam star, Jan Mulder, lamented the emphasis on winning over style.

"In Holland, we are system mad and the world doesn't know it. The world thinks we always play attacking football but we play with the handbrake on.

"All this passing at the back ... tick-tock, backwards, sideways, tick-tock ... it's boring. Too much fear, too much caution."

Modern coaches, according to Mulder, think too much about this simple game.

"The talent of the players is decisive. One could always play naturally. No thinking please. No thinking!"

Still Mulder must be happy to see his countrymen again in a World Cup final.

Their opponent, Spain, is in a fiesta and siesta mood but not the avuncular former Real Madrid coach, Vicente del Bosque.

Shortly after Real had marched into the Champions League final during the centenary year, beating fierce rivals Barcelona in the semis in April 2002, del Bosque uttered: "Solo celebramos los trofeos (we only celebrate winning trophies)."

The defensive midfielder in Vujadin Boskov's line-up when Real lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the 1981 European Cup final, del Bosque has kept his emotions in check throughout the World Cup. On the seven occasions the Spanish bench erupted into joy celebrating their seven goals so far, del Bosque remained composed and nonchalant.

The writer has decided to refrain from predicting the outcome of the final, enough by saying both teams deserved to be in the final for having had the courage to adopt a positive and attacking pattern throughout the campaign. It would, however, be nice if the land that gives the world Real Madrid and Barcelona is finally acclaimed as the best in the world ... and for del Bosque to finally celebrate with unbridled joy.

And now, we shall revisit the writer's first column:

Best team award

Brazil, seeking their sixth title armed with the distinction of being the only nation to lift the Cup outside their continent, in Sweden 1958 when Pele was unveiled to the world and again in Japan/South Korea in 2002, when the gaped-tooth Ronaldo reigned supreme. They lost to eventual finalists, The Netherlands

Argentina, with proven scorers Gonzalo Higuain and Diego Milito not likely to start alongside each other and a legend as manager, who lacks the ideas in how best to gel the team together. Outplayed by the Germans in the last eight

The Netherlands, boasting one of the most creative midfields and strikeforce, aim to become only the eighth nation to win the Cup. They are in the final

Spain, Euro champs and arguably the best purveyors of possession football, attempt to emulate West Germany 72 Euro win/74 World Cup victory. So are they

Germany, dismiss the Teutonic efficiency at your own peril, despite missing the injured Michael Ballack. Took the competition by storm

Top-scorer award, officially known as the Golden Shoe

Wayne Rooney, who has added header as part of his deadly repertoire. Oopppsss

Cacau, Brazilian-born attacker donning German colours. Scored one goal but got injured

Robin van Persie, hungry for goals after an injury-plagued season. One goal so far ...

Gonzalo Higuain, Argentine master marksman at Real Madrid. Four goals and the only hat-trick of the tournament

Robinho, lithe and tricky across the pitch. Two goals, including one against the Dutch

Samuel Etoo, treble winners with Barcelona and Inter Milan. Two goals

David Villa, heading to Barcelona after the World Cup. Five goals so far

Wooden spoonists, Golden Raspberry Award

North Korea, not likely to repeat the 1966 exploits. Told you so

Honduras, despite having Spurs midfielder Wilson Palacios running the engine room. Told you so

Best player, or Golden Ball

Robinho, likely to overshadow Kaka as the beacon of light for the boys from Brazil. Oops, but he did overshadow Kaka

Lionel Messi is out of this world but can his teammates keep pace? His teammates could not, that's the problem

Cristiano Ronaldo tends to overdo it but remains a potent force, especially with his free-kicks. Oops

Wesley Sneijder, treble winner with Inter Milan and eager to supply the ammunition for his fellow Dutchmen. Shall I say I told you so?

Best coach

Carlos Dunga has succeeded in forming a team in his playing mould, no-frills yet effective. Sacked

Fabio Capello will pray his regimented approach pays off. Survived the chop

Joachim Loew has a young team to call upon. Told you so!

Bert van Marwijk may turn out to be a successful Dutch coach. Can he go one better than Rinus Michels (1974) and Ernst Happel (1978)?

Vicente del Bosque has added a new dimension to the Spanish armada. Can he create history?

Darkhorse of the tournament

Mexico will play beautiful football. Told you so!

Chile are rich in Latin flair. Told you so!

Slovakia may be debutants but rich in football tradition. Told you so!

Slovenia represent the Soviet elements. Failed to advance to the second round by a mere point

Biggest flops

Italy are too old to contest. Told you so!

France, a team divided. Told you so!

South Africa stare at early exit. Told you so!

Aku budak Tingkat Empat

Ulang tahun ke-53 Berita Harian 1 Julai lalu meriah.

Ia di sebelah new wing Balai Berita yang menempatkan Berita Harian, Harian Metro, The New Straits Times dan the Malay Mail bermula 1991.

Bacalah catatan nostalgia sambut 53 tahun BH, laporan Harian Metro, sambutan meriah, catatan penulis skrip terkenal, ahli politikus dan terujanya rashidah ibrahim.

Beberapa kali aku mendapat byline tumpang lori muka depan. Maknanya, tumpang byline Hamid lah...pemandu bas dipukul di Air Panas, tangki air kotor di Stesen Bas Klang dan macam-macam lagi. Tugas aku menginterviu individu terbabit, balik ofis Hamid yang ketuk story. Harian Metro ketika itu baru beberapa bulan beroperasi. Terasnya Datuk Mior Kamarul Shahid, Ahmad Puad Onah, Abdul Ghafar Ismail, Ahmad Al-Husna, Idros Ali, Razak Rafflis, Johari Mohamad, Abu Bakar Atan dan Adam Salleh, sekadar menyebut beberapa nama.

Thomas, Mesut and Lim

Thomas Mueller continues the fine tradition of his namesakes...look at the film strip from left Gerd Mueller, Dieter Mueller and Hansi Mueller...this piece appeared in EPLx Kosmo! on January 23, 2010.

The headline reads "The world awaits Mesut Ozil". This piece appeared in EPLx Kosmo! on March 6, 2010.

Loose cannon also wrote this article in the Malay Mail in June 2005.

FORMER international Lim Teong Kim has set a new benchmark for Malaysian coaches after successfully completing the German Football Association (DFB)coaching course in Germany last week.

The master licence, the highest form of coaching certificate in Germany, grants Teong Kim the right to coach any Bundesliga outfit as well as conduct coaching courses for his fellow coaches.

The certificate states that Teong Kim is a recognised fussball lehrer (football teacher).

Malaccan-born Teong Kim, who is currently an assistant coach of the Bayern Munich Under-16 team, was one of 32 coaches who attended the six-month course at the Hennes Weisweller academy at the renowned Cologne University.

The biggest personality to graduate from the same course was former German international playmaker and European champion, Andreas Moeller.

In an interview with Mailsport in Cologne last week, two days before the results were announced, Teong Kim said he had set a time limit for himself to land a contract with a Bundesliga team.

“I hope to coach a Bundesliga team before I reach 50,” said Teong Kim, who turned 42 on April 11.

Teong Kim will coach the Bayern Under-15 team next season after his contract with the Bundesliga giants was renewed for three years in 2004.
An elated Teong Kim, who is residing in Munich, broke the news of his graduation to Mailsport over the weekend.

The father of three who left the FA of Malaysia (FAM) in 1999, attended the course out of his own initiative, which cost him 10,000 euros (RM46,000).

“I was not sent by Bayern but I was willing to foot the bill because I am driven by the desire to improve myself,” said Teong Kim, who spent a season with Hertha Berlin SC in 1987.

The club were then playing in the third division.

Teong Kim, who is married to a German, became a member of Bayern youth coaching staff in 1995 after obtaining his German B licence.

He obtained his A licence at the Hennef Sports School in 1997 before making a return to Kuala Lumpur in early 1998 to take up the offer as the head of the academies at FAM.

He led the Malaysian side to the Nike International Premier Cup Asian Pacific Zone Under-14 title after a splendid 3-0 win over Thailand in the final in June 1998, winning them a trip to the World Finals in Paris to coincide with France’98.

Teong Kim, however, left abruptly in 1999 after his attempt at pushing for reforms in the country was resisted by certain quarters.

His last outing as a player was for Kedah in 1992-1993.

The former midfielder renowned for his ruthless streak, began his career with Malacca in 1983 before moving to Selangor (1984-86).

He also played a season for Negri Sembilan.

From 1987 to 1991, Teong Kim played for KL, winning Malaysia Cup winners’ medals for a record three consecutive times from 1987-1989.

Apart from the stay in Berlin, Teong Kim had a brief stint with Austrian second division outfit, Gak Graz in 1990.

Suarez, Gyan and Zidane

Blame Suarez if you must, but...

I think if Zidane had been in Gyan's shoes, he would have had the temperament, composure and technique to beat Muslera and show Suarez and Co the exit.

Remember Zidane's audacious freekick against Buffon in the 2006 final?

What about his penalty and then the last-gasp freekick against England in Euro 2004?

And again his winning penalty, virtually the last kick of the match, against Portugal in Euro 2000?

Allow me to be nostalgic, as a player of Zidane's type is scarce...especially in France.

Trend

Ah...Zinedine "Yazid" Zidane, how I miss his balletic grace!

From the moment he came on as a sub in August 1994, scoring two goals - a screamer from 30 yards and a header to hold Czech Republic to a 2-2 draw to his audacious penalty kick against Italy in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, Zinedine Zidane gave me immense pleasure. For my fellow football purists, enjoy Zidane's 31 goals for Les Bleus...
