Strasbourg - the birthplace of Arsene Wenger and once home for Malaysian footballer, Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli. Apparently the city in the region of Alsace is also home for Malaysian-born sisters - Sashina and Teshana Vignes Waran.
My facebook friends alerted me to the presence of a pair of sisters who has taken the region by storm. Not only she's the French University champion, Sashina is also second only to France's no 1 lady shuttler, Pi Hongyang in the land of egalite, fraternite and liberte. Teshana is No 12. Read here
When Akmal was putting on his scoring boots for FR Haguenau that impressed footy mag France Football so much, my main source of his exploits came from dna.fr, the online version of Dernieres Nouvelles d'Alsace, a top newspaper in the region of Alsace. So I googled their names and VOILA...
Sashina (the taller one) and Teshana given due recognition by Strasbourg university. Pic dna.fr
Climbing the podium...
I'm not too sure if the Vignes Waran sisters intend to follow the footsteps of another pair of siblings who sought pastures anew here.
Also there's another Malaysian with a badminton background, Izuan Ibrahim, plying his trade overseas - in Japan.
Sashina or Teshana, are they the answer to our lack of women shuttlers? Or are we resigned to losing them to the French? What does BA of Malaysia (BAM) think of this, I wonder!
