Surviving England

The Towkay who played as if he owned the pitch

We all miss his marauding runs, work ethics, nose for goals and above all the person in him, dearly

The midfield maestro who once shared the pitch with Uli Hoeness and Ottmar Hitzfeld

Sudanese-Malaysian who enjoyed Karl Weigang's implicit trust

An opportunistic marksman

A reader Julian Kok writes:

"There was an argument not too long ago regarding some Malaysian footballers who can play in the English league. Top of the list, if I am not wrong, is Mokhtar Dahari. Many people agreed that he had the right physique and mental attitude to take on the hardest and toughest defence in the then English First Division.

"The issue is this: Who else from Malaysia's footballing past (and present, if I dare) could have made it. I have broken them down into the divisions in which they could have played years ago... Feel free to add, subtract and offer your kind (or sarcastic/caustic) remarks.

1) English 1st Division (before Premier-ship)

- Mokhtar Dahari

2) 2nd Division

- Soh Chin Aun
- Arumugam
- Santokh Singh
- Shukor Salleh
- Wong Chun Wah
- Jamal Nasir

3) 3rd Division

- Isa Bakar
- James Wong
- Zainal Abidin
- Ong Yu Tiang
- Rosmaini

4) 4th Division

- Khalid ali
- Abdah Alif

I believe there are many others who would have plenty to say about this list.

Best Regards
Julian

Chow Chee Keong (Keeper - Sngor)
Lim Fung Kee (Keeper Perak)
Looi Loon Teik (Sayap kanan Kedah)
Hamidon Abdullah (Striker Pahang)
Hassan Sani (Striker Sabah)
Wong Hung Nung (Midfield Sngor)
Leong Teong Kim (Midfield Melaka/KL/Sngor)
Marzuki Ismaun (Terengganu)
Abdulllah Ali (Terengganu)
Yahya Jusoh (Terengganu)
Bakri Ibni (Perlis)
Zainuddin Hussin (N. Sembilan)
Tukiman Bahari (Johor)
Chen Wee Hoi (penang)
James Yaakub (Sarawak)
Kamaruddin Md. Nor & Salim Mahmud (Kelantan)
Khor Sek Leng @ Azrai Khor Abdullah (kedah)

Kadang-kadang kita menang, kadang-kadang dia menang.

that all

What about Chow Chee Keong, Wong Kam Fook and Lim Fung Kee, all of whom actually played professional football overseas ?

Arnaz M. Khairul said...

Us Malaysians seem trapped in the wonder of what might have been. So much so that we forget to work on what we want to be.
This is one of the major ailments in our sport. Everybody goes on and on about the greats of the past. Okay, they were once great. But we never played in the World Cup, let alone win it.
Rizal, I guess you too have heard over and over again from the veterans (no disrespect to them) about how it used to be, how hard it was "back then"..
But come on, what worked then would not work now. We won't find what works now if everybody keeps on thinking about how it worked in 1970!!!!

Matlan Marjan (Sabah)

He is the only Malaysian professional player whom managed to score 2 goals against a full England team while playing for Malaysia on the 12 June, 1991.[

Ada bantahan?

Arnaz, pse dont insult our veterans. The reason why we are dwelling on the past is because we have no future. If we have no future what recourse do we have except to wallow in the sweetness of an era which has given us so many wonderful memories. To cut a long story short, ask any football fan to name even a present national player. I can bet you, you will draw a blank. So Arnaz, let's look to the past, not the future. Memories are always sweet.

Pengadil nyaris kena serang
Oleh Lokman Zainal Abidin
lockman@nstp.com.my

Rizal,

We always speak about what our past greats can do.

The present batch of players can't even lift a finger to help themself. What is the root of the problem(s)? If the match fixing allegations in MM yesterday true? If match fixing is still practised by the players, Malaysian football is in trouble. It is just like the hockey team spiraldown turn due to this where the case is closed due to high level interference.

What are major causes?
