Chua Boon Huat - gone too soon

IT has been slightly more than two weeks since Chua Boon Huat's tragic and sudden demise. The mainstream media paid a tribute deserving of an ace who gave his all on the padang.

Since hockey was the domain of Mustapha Kamaruddin (Moose) and later Satwant Singh Dhaliwal and Graig Nunis at the Malay Mail, seldom was I given the task to cover the sport.

But I played the role of sidekick to Moose in covering the 1997 World Cup qualifiers, given access to watch hockey matches during the 1998 Commonwealth Games and was an occasional spectator over the years.

I just wish to share some of the quotes on my twitter timeline, with memories of enjoying Deepavali delicacies cooked by Satwant's late mother in Tampin with the late Chua, Mirnawan Nawawi and the whole Malay Mail sports desk embedded on my mind.

Satwant's suggestion to retire the No 3 jersey was later picked up by the Star and the MHC.

Masih terasa kehilangan Chua. Bagi saya dia bagai abang besar dalam skuad negara sekarang dan pastinya mampu memberi sumbangan bermakna dalam Hoki Piala Dunia di Belanda Mei nanti. Sekalung takziah buat keluarga Chua. Semoga Malaysia akan terus melahirkan pemain berbakat seperti beliau.
